Why Do You Need to Dry Filament?

Firstly, let's talk about filament drying in general. Do you even need to do it? Well, all (or mostly all) 3D printing filament is hygroscopic. Hygroscopic means that a material likes to absorb moisture from the air. So if you tend to leave your filament sitting out exposed to the air, and the air has a lot of moisture in it, your filament is going to invite some of that moisture in. The longer it sits out, the more moisture it'll absorb.

And the more moisture your filament has in it, the harder it can be to print with. Some materials are more prone to this than others. For instance, PETG and TPU are more hygroscopic than PLA. One of the things that happens to moist filament is it can be stringy when it prints, or you can sometimes actually hear little sizzling and popping sounds, and see little puffs of steam coming out of the nozzle.

filament dryer

In areas where humidity is high, it's crucial not to leave filament exposed to the air for a long time. To prevent moisture absorption, it's recommended to store filament in a sealed container such as a gallon Ziploc bag, preferably with a desiccant packet to absorb any moisture present.

It's acceptable to leave filament out for a day or two during printing, it's essential to return it to its storage container promptly afterward. If filament begins to exhibit issues during printing, such as increased stringing or a diminished surface finish, it likely has absorbed moisture and requires drying.

To remedy this, place the filament in a filament dryer and run it through a drying cycle. This process will eliminate excess moisture, restoring the filament to optimal printing conditions and ensuring high-quality prints. Indeed, even brand new filaments can benefit from being dried in a filament dryer.

How to Tell If Filament is Wet?

When filament absorbs moisture, it can cause printing issues like bubbling, popping, and poor adhesion. Here's how to tell if your filament is wet:

1. Visual Inspection on color changes
Check for discoloration or spots on the filament. Moisture can cause filament to change color or develop spots.

2. Cracking or Popping Sounds
When printing, listen for cracking or popping sounds. These noises can indicate that moisture is evaporating within the filament and causing air bubbles.

3. Printing Defects like poor layer adhesion
Wet filament may have a tendency to curl or warp more than dry filament, especially during printing. Pay attention to the quality of your prints. If you notice inconsistent extrusion, poor layer adhesion, or surface imperfections, it could be a sign of wet filament.

4. Stringing prints can signal moisture in filament
Moisture affects viscosity, causing oozing during printing. When filament absorbs water, it forms steam bubbles, increasing stringing. Drying filament before use can mitigate this issue, though other factors like temperature and settings also contribute.

5. Increase Weight of the Filament
Weigh a length of filament before and after drying it thoroughly. If it gains weight after drying, it likely absorbed moisture.

If you suspect your filament is wet, consider drying it using methods like using a dedicated filament dryer. Proper storage in airtight containers with desiccants can also help prevent moisture absorption in the future.

sunlu_s4_filament_dryer_800x800.webp__PID:33c6652d-c5f9-4b80-b1e1-dadfaf213a8c

Heating in the Sunlu Filadryer S4 is powered by a 330W PTC heater accompanied by three fans. One fan draws cool air in while the other two direct hot air throughout the box, aiming for uniform heat distribution. The concept of using a PTC heater was borrowed from EIBOS, while, Sunlu has enhanced it to accommodate a larger space and more reels of filament. The effectiveness of this heating and fan layout is crucial, especially considering that some basic filament dryers lack proper heat distribution, resulting in uneven heating of the filament.

Additionally, caution must be exercised when setting the temperature, as excessively high temperatures could potentially damage certain types of filament. This is particularly relevant for materials like PLA, which are sensitive to high temperatures.

sunlu_s4_filament_dryer_ead9e60f-dd5f-49bc-bf9a-4543237c7506_800x800.webp__PID:e1dadfaf-213a-4cd0-a5d1-21aa0b9cb193

6 Default Filaments Drying Settings

The Sunlu Filadryer S4 offers six pre-configured filament profiles with set values, but users have the flexibility to adjust these values according to their preferences. Users can also set temperature defaults for different types of filament, streamlining the process and eliminating the need to remember specific temperatures for each filament type.

With a countdown timer function, users can set the dryer to operate in constant heat mode for up to 24 hours. Once the timer runs out, the heat automatically turns off, providing energy efficiency and peace of mind.

However, it's worth noting that while the Filadryer S4 allows for setting a box temperature, individual temperature settings for each reel of filament are not supported. As a result, simultaneous drying of different filament types with varying temperature requirements, such as PLA and nylon, is not possible in this configuration.

Larger Spool Filaments Drying

Due to the compact size of Sunlu FilaDryer S4, you can modify it for the drying of some of your larger spools filaments, like 2KG per roll spool filaments. There's a printable mod available that extends the top cover of it. But it requires cutting part of the lid, and based on your slicer, it's going to take a few kilograms of material to print. The add-on allows you to increase the height, so you can throw some of the bigger spools inside, or you can dry your shoes in it.;)

These expanded covers can also be used independently or together with the Sunlu top covers opened and snapped into the rear of the new body if you just want to expand your SUNLU to add 4 more spools of filament of regular size. These are held on top of a new deck plate that features holes for air flow and ramps for holding the spools of filament in place.

The new chamber bodies are double wall with just the right amount of infill to leave some air gap for extra insulation. I recommend printing these parts in ABS to withstand the temperatures.

More Reliable Stability: nylon filament is more reliable and easier to print with low moisture absorption and good adhesion to substrates. It has lower moisture absorption and longer shelf life, and a much lower melting temperature (185°C) than conventional nylon consumables.

Excellent Mechanical Properties and Heat Resistance: Nylon PA6 filament is an indispensable structural material with high heat resistance and good impact resistance. 3D printed Nylon PA6 is suitable for producing durable parts with glossy surfaces and high resistance to fracture.

Printing Setting:

  • Nozzle: 280-300℃, hardened steel nozzle required;
  • Bed Temp: 25-50℃ (Do NOT exceed 50℃);
  • Speed: 30mm/s – 60mm/s;
  • Fan: off
  • Drying Settings: 80℃ for 12h
  • Annealing: 70℃ for 2h (To ensure a good heat resistance of your printed part it is recommended to anneal your print model);
  • Bed Surface: almost any surface with a thin coat of PVA glue or Magigoo PA. The warping will be effectively suppressed.

Notes:

-Abrasion of the brass nozzle happens quite often when printing Nylon PA6. A wear-resistant nozzle, such as hardened steel and ruby nozzle, is highly recommended to be used with our Nylon PA6 filament.
- Nylon PA6 filament is sensitive to moisture and should always be stored and used under dry conditions (relative humidity below 20%).
- If Nylon PA6 is used as the support material for itself, please remove the
support structure before excessive moisture absorption. Otherwise the support
structure can be permanently bonded to the model.
- After the printing process, it is recommended to anneal the model in the oven at 80°C for 6 hours.
